Compress Midi Velocities in Reaper DAW

It’s easy to smooth the dynamics of midi velocity in Reaper to create a more compressed even sound.
First, open up the item needing compression into the piano roll.

Piano part with too much velocity / dynamic for this piece

Select all the notes. Then right click on an empty part of the grid (not on a note) and in the dropdown menue select: EVENT PROPERTIES and change the type to NOTE

Then in the Velocity box you can use *(multiply) or / (divide) to reduce the overall dynamic of the velocities. For example using *.25 or /4 will give you a 4:1 compression ratio. Hit apply and the velocities will be squeezed.

Then while everything is selected, grab the velocities and bring them back up to around 75% or wherever suits your piece.

Need more compression – just repeat the process. I usually find this process plus a little bit of manual tweaking is a really quick way to get a more even sound.

How to rip audio CDs in Reaper

Insert the audio CD into your computer’s drive.

  1. Open Reaper and navigate to File > Batch File/Item Converter.
  2. Select the drive where your CD is located.
  3. Choose your preferred output folder and audio format.
  4. Start the ripping process.

Note: Reaper does not automatically add metadata or rename files. You can edit metadata in bulk using the Batch Converter or update it afterward in the Media Explorer.

If you are finding that your links in a Facebook post are not displaying in blue as active ‘clickable’ links I have found these two things can sometimes help:

  • Keep the link on its own separate line in the post
  • Use the full URL including https:// etc
  • Avoid using bold text (I have sometimes found that copying plain text in from a notepad helps if you are pasting text in case the text has any bold formatting in it)
